Watch: 49ers players take over SF Giants home opener

It’s opening day for the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park, and what better way to bring in the home opener than with some 49ers players?

San Francisco 49ers players were invited to the Giants’ home opener against the San Diego Padres Friday, tasked with getting the crowd hyped before the game. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel and linebacker Fred Warner were first up, throwing out the first pitch simultaneously. But while each player has their own catcher to throw to, both weren’t needed, with Warner providing a memorable moment for all in The Bay.

Eh, that’s not a strike Fred, just a bit outside.

Warner’s misfire was the talk of the day, with several 49ers media members poking fun at the throw.

We’ve seen Deebo throw a touchdown pass. It’s probably best we never see Fred Warner attempt that. 😂 https://t.co/4u9ckWk8aZ

Meanwhile, Samuel’s pitch was a bit better, at least reaching the intended catcher. After Warner’s throw, he scurried away, laughing in embarrassment from the misfire. Samuel poked fun at his teammate as well, pointing to the ground to imply the direction of Warner’s toss.

Regardless, both Warner and Samuel were lighthearted about the poor throws, dapping up Giants’ staff members on the way back to the dugouts.

That wasn’t the only ceremonial first for the 49ers Friday, with punter Mitch Wishnowsky taking part in the festivities as well. But instead of throwing a baseball, the Aussie punter boomed a football out of Oracle Park.

A booming punt into McCovey Cove by the Boomin’ Onion of the 49ers.

The pre-game festivities were wrapped by player introductions, with each Giants’ starter getting their own walkout and video package. Most players were met with a standing ovation, as optimism around the 2024 MLB season is already in swing.

It’s far too early to say the Niners aced their 2024 draft, but there was obvious talent on display at rookie mini-camp; and a couple of undrafted players who looked impressive.

The 49ers are counting on new defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen to get the unit back to dominance

Now they’re counting on the internal promotion of Nick Sorensen into that role — with a dose of outside perspective from former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley — to get the Niners back to performing at a dominant level defensively after taking a little step back last season. “We all know the standard here and we all want to win, we all want to play great defense and that’s the expectation,” Sorensen said Friday in his first public remarks since being hired earlier this offseason. The 49ers didn’t reach that standard last season under Wilks that had been set under previous coordinators Robert Saleh and DeMeco Ryans, especially in the playoffs when they got gashed on the ground against Green Bay and Detroit and then wilted late in a Super Bowl loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
