Phillies Agree to Deal With Former Braves Outfielder

The Philadelphia Phillies are continuing to add to their roster as MLB Spring Training begins to wind to a close with Opening Day just a couple weeks away on March 28. On Thursday, the Phillies reached a deal with outfielder Jordan Luplow on a minor league deal just a day after being released by their divisional rivals, the Atlanta Braves, according to FanSided.

Twins' Jordan Luplow does Craig Kimbrel impression on mound

Luplow, an outfielder who plays all three positions plus first base, has seen time in the Major Leagues over the course of seven seasons. The California native owns a career slashline of .212/.314/.423 while in 2023 he was able to compile a .208/.322/.325 line with two home runs in 39 games split between the Toronto Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins.

It is not a signing that will move the needle much for Philadelphia given the talent on their roster. However, Luplow’s versatility on the field, combined with his veteran presence, could play well for the Phillies’ depth. Especially as they look for options to fill out their bench or have someone in the wings in AAA should an injury occur.

The Braves released him in order to give him an opportunity to find a better situation elsewhere according to the report. Philadelphia has a fairly solidified roster so it remains to be seen exactly why he chose to sign with the Phillies other than the above proposed scenarios. Perhaps the chance at playing with and helping Philadelphia, who has a renown clubhouse, may be exactly what he is looking for at this point in his career.
