HOT NEWS: The 49ers Need to Draft Another Quarterback

Oct 29, 2023; Santa Clara, California, USA; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13) smiles

The 49ers used to brag about how good their quarterback room was.

No, they didn’t have a franchise quarterback per se, but they had three quarterbacks they felt they could win with, and depth at that position was extremely important to them.

Not anymore, apparently. Now they have Brock Purdy, who they believe is their franchise quarterback for the next 10 years. So suddenly, the quarterback room is irrelevant. They have Joshua Dobbs, a second-string quarterback who really should be a third-stringer. And they have Brandon Allen, a third-string quarterback who really should be a fourth-stringer or a coach.

Which means the 49ers really need a second-string quarterback. Someone with potential and upside. Someone the 49ers draft this year. Someone like Purdy.

Because as good as the 49ers are, there’s no guarantee they can win games with Dobbs or Allen. Last season, Dobbs started 12 games for two teams, threw 10 interceptions and fumbled 14 times. Not great. And Allen has started only 9 games in his career, winning just twice.

The 49ers need to upgrade their quarterback room. And they don’t have to draft one in Rounds 1, 2 or 3. They can upgrade their quarterback room by drafting a QB in Rounds 6 or 7. Because they don’t need the biggest guy with the strongest arm. They can win with a short quarterback with a weak arm if he’s smart, poised, mature and has accuracy and anticipation and is mobile.

Not many teams are looking for quarterbacks who fit that description. The 49ers have a type, and it’s abundant. Go draft one.

The 49ers are counting on new defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen to get the unit back to dominance

Now they’re counting on the internal promotion of Nick Sorensen into that role — with a dose of outside perspective from former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley — to get the Niners back to performing at a dominant level defensively after taking a little step back last season. “We all know the standard here and we all want to win, we all want to play great defense and that’s the expectation,” Sorensen said Friday in his first public remarks since being hired earlier this offseason. The 49ers didn’t reach that standard last season under Wilks that had been set under previous coordinators Robert Saleh and DeMeco Ryans, especially in the playoffs when they got gashed on the ground against Green Bay and Detroit and then wilted late in a Super Bowl loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
