A new, five-round mock draft from NFL.com’s Chad Reuter sent five new defensive players to the Green Bay Packers, including potential Day 1 starters at linebacker and safety.
It’s hard to imagine new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley being upset with the start of this draft class for the Packers, who are young and ascending at so many spots on offense but need reinforcements in the back end of the defense in 2024.
Here’s a breakdown of the players sent to the Packers in Reuter’s new five-round mock draft:
1.25: LB Payton Wilson, NC State
Height: 6-4
Weight: 233
RAS: 9.88
PFF rank: 27
From Reuter: “New defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley coached against Wilson when he was at Boston College, watching his Eagles beat the Wolfpack in 2022 despite the linebacker’s three tackles for loss and interception. Hafley knows full well the sort of athlete and football player Wilson would add to his scheme in Green Bay.”
Breakdown: The Packers have a big need at linebacker, and Wilson is an elite athlete coming off a highly disruptive final collegiate season (All-American, Bednarik award winner). He’s also torn his ACL twice and had two shoulder surgeries, and he’ll be 24 during his rookie season. For as badly as the Packers need to address the linebacker position in this draft, they should let a different team roll the dice on Wilson. Using a first-round pick on an older player with an extensive injury history at a non-premium position is probably not the best way to minimize risk with your top asset in a high-risk draft.
2.41: S Jaden Hicks, Washington State
Height: 6-2
Weight: 211
RAS: 8.94
PFF rank: 61
Breakdown: Hicks could be the strong safety Robin to Xavier McKinney’s post safety Batman for Jeff Hafley. To varying degrees, Hicks can hit, take on blocks and cover, especially when lined up in the box or slot. A starter as a redshirt freshman and sophomore, Hicks looks like an ascending player. There’s a chance he would be the Week 1 starter next to McKinney.
2.58: OT Roger Rosengarten, Washington
Height: 6-5
Weight: 308
RAS: 9.20
PFF rank: 152
Breakdown: A two-year starter at right tackle for Washington who tested well at the combine after not allowing a sack in 2022 or 2023. Rosengarten could be the developmental offensive tackle the Packers need after losing David Bakhtiari and Yosh Nijman.
Height: 6-3
Weight: 283
RAS: 8.58
PFF rank: 73
Breakdown: Dorlus doesn’t have perfect size for either the edge or the interior at the NFL level, but he was disruptive at both spots at Oregon and is one of most versatile defensive front players in the class. Jeff Hafley could use him at defensive end on run downs or move him inside to rush the passer on passing downs. Or the Packers to have him put on weight and dedicate Dorlus to an interior spot, where he has starting potential.
Height: 5-9
Weight: 182
RAS: 8.43
PFF rank: 36
Breakdown: Sainristil’s lack of size might take him off the Packers’ board completely. He just doesn’t fit the team’s cornerback model. But Sainristil was a dominant slot defender for Michigan and taking him here could give the Packers a long-term difference maker at nickel corner. Keisean Nixon re-signed, so it’s possible the Packers don’t view nickel as a big need entering the draft. This one is unlikely.
Height: 6-6
Weight: 278
RAS: 9.92
PFF rank: 288
Breakdown: Cole wasn’t super productive — he had only 11 combined sacks and QB hits over the last three seasons — but it’s hard to dismiss his combination of size, length and athleticism at a premium position. Could the Packers develop him into a pass-rushing threat at the next level? He’d get time in Green Bay behind Rashan Gary, Preston Smith and Lukas Van Ness.
5.169: RB Bucky Irving, Oregon
Height: 5-9
Weight: 192
RAS: 2.16
PFF rank: 84
Breakdown: Another tough sell here. Irving is small and didn’t test well, possibly eliminating him from the Packers draft board. Aaron Jones was small and probably played at under 200 pounds at times, but he tested like an elite athlete and certainly ran like an elite athlete at the NFL level. Irving forced a lot of missed tackles and was a capable receiver, so maybe the Packers see some Jones in his game despite the size and testing.
