Thursday was a big one for the Green Bay Packers, and particularly for their incoming rookie class. It was the day that they were all scheduled to arrive in Green Bay, as the team holds its rookie minicamp on Friday and Saturday of this week.

The two-day minicamp is the first chance for the Packers’ coaches to get to know their new players following the draft — certainly some of them may have met with these players at the Combine or All-Star games, but they can now dig in and start teaching the scheme and the way the Packers operate. That will be valuable as the team looks ahead to the 2024 season and to the rookies’ potential contributions.

The Packers should have all 11 draft picks and 8 undrafted free agents in this weekend for the camp, but they also can bring other players from the 90-man roster who do not have a full season of NFL experience. Then there will also be a group of non-roster invitees who will fill out the weekend’s roster, a group that could well include some future rostered players. Perhaps the most notable rookie minicamp invitee in recent years was offensive lineman Lucas Patrick, who came in on a tryout basis and ended up getting a contract a few weeks later. Patrick went on to have a solid five-year career in Green Bay, starting 24 games, before signing with the Chicago Bears two years ago.
