Baltimore Orioles No. 3 Prospect Viewed as Early Trade Candidate

After making arguably the biggest move of the offseason by acquiring Corbin Burnes in a blockbuster trade, the Baltimore Orioles could still be in the mix to land another quality arm.

The Orioles’ pitching has been decent to start the season, holding a 3.77 ERA as a team, which ranks 11th in baseball. While it’s improved, a contending team can always use another arm in the rotation or bullpen.

Baltimore has arguably the best farm system in baseball. Not only do they have high-end talent throughout the minors, but they also have a ridiculous amount of depth. They have multiple players that could interest teams at the trade deadline and that’s a good thing.

While trading prospects is tough at times, the front office has built this organization perfectly, and moving on from one or two of them isn’t a bad idea. There are only so many spots on a field for someone to play.

David Schoenfield of ESPN ranked his top trade candidates for all 30 teams, listing Coby Mayo as one of the Orioles’ top trade candidates.

Mayo, still just 22 years old, has put up impressive numbers in the minors. The right-handed hitter is slashing .348/.403/.652 with five home runs and four doubles in 69 at-bats.

His strikeout numbers are a bit concerning, striking out 148 times in 140 games last year, but the 29 home runs make up for it.

Given his status as one of the top prospects in baseball, Mayo could be traded in a massive deal. He’d certainly be a nice player to have in the coming years, but a proven arm can help this team win a World Series, which is always the goal.
