KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – One man has been charged with felony stealing for the theft of equipment from the Miami Dolphins during a January game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Records for the 16th Circuit Court of Jackson Co. indicate that on Wednesday, March 20, Joseph M. Brown, who is accused of stealing equipment from the Miami Dolphins during a January game in Kansas City, was charged with felony stealing.

On Jan. 14, court records noted that the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department was called to the area of Truman and Central Ave. with reports of a theft. When officers arrived, they met with a representative of the Miami Dolphins who reported a box truck that contained team gear and equipment had been broken into.

Dolphins officials told KCPD that various items, such as media equipment, five Pelican cases with media equipment, four large aqua blue colored equipment cases, three large equipment cases, football pads, pants, gloves, shoes, cold weather gear, hockey bags with large “cape” coats and game film, had all been stolen.

Court records indicated that the total loss was more than $46,300 and team officials chose to press charges. With surveillance, footage from the scene, a Ford F-150 was identified as the suspect vehicle which led officials to an attempted traffic stop on Jan. 12 behind 2005 Askew Ave., however, the driver, later identified as Brown, sped away from law enforcement officials.

Finally, a separate investigation into a stolen iPad which continued to ping its location led KCPD to the F-150. Again, Brown sped away but not before police noticed boxes in the truck’s bed that matched the description of those taken from the Dolphins. Throughout the investigation, the 2009 Askew address continued to pop up and surveillance was conducted.

On Jan. 17, a search warrant was conducted at Brown’s home and court documents noted that law enforcement officials found several stolen Dolphins coats and other items connected to the report. Outside the home, a metal barrel with burnt items revealed a Miami Dolphins logo and a ruminant of what appeared to be the word video that had been partially burned. Additional matching cold weather gear was found in the ashes which had not yet burned.

On Jan. 24, court records noted the investigation finally led the Tactical Response Team to enter a parking garage at Country Club Plaza. The vehicle was surrounded and pushed back into a concrete wall. For the next 10 minutes, Brown would continue to accelerate the truck and spin the wheel to try to break the vehicle pin.

Eventually, KCPD said officers used several less lethal AR-1 rounds as well as tear gas to take Brown into custody. A bond of $50,000 was issued and as of March 20, no longer remains behind bars.
