The Kansas City Chiefs have signed Carson Wentz as their new backup quarterback to Patrick Mahomes. Wentz, who was once a contender for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award, spent last season with the Los Angeles Rams.

This was his first year as a backup after three tough years as the starter for the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders. He lost his place as the long-term starter for the Eagles to Jalen Hurts and was eventually traded.

In his first year as a number two, Wentz only started one game, replacing Matthew Stafford. He did well against the San Francisco 49ers, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another in the team’s final regular-season game.

After not being re-signed by the Rams, Wentz agreed to a one-year deal with the Chiefs on Monday evening. Wentz had an amazing start to his career with the Eagles.

He was leading the race for the MVP in his second season before he tore his ACL in week 14 while playing against his new Rams team. This injury seemed to slow him down, and after another average year, the Eagles decided to move on to second-round pick Hurts.

Wentz was traded twice, first to the Colts where he ran a run-heavy offensive system that didn’t fully utilise its offensive weapons. He was then traded again, this time to the Commanders where he only lasted seven games as the starter before losing his place to Taylor Heinicke.

At just 31, Wentz could be a long-term option for the Chiefs as a back-up quarterback, with his value seemingly at an all-time low despite impressing in his cameo role with the Rams.

In addition to signing Wentz, the Chiefs seem to be not done adding free agents to the team ahead of the NFL Draft, after inviting running back JK Dobbins for a visit. The former Baltimore Ravens back has been plagued by injuries throughout his career after being a second-round pick, but has impressed when healthy – averaging 5.8 yards on 234 carries.

Dobbins has not yet been signed by the Chiefs, but like Wentz, could be another low-risk, high-reward move ahead of the 2024 year in which Kansas City aims to make history by becoming the first-ever team to win three consecutive championships.
