BREAKING: How Much Pressure is on the 49ers to Have a Successful 2024 Draft?

It is undeniable that the 49ers have one of the best rosters in the NFL.

The amount of All-Pro and Pro Bowl players they put out last season is a testament to that. However, beyond those honored players, the 49ers lack the adequate quality. San Francisco has become a top heavy roster than a stacked one.

That is due to their misses in their last two NFL draft classes. The 49ers haven’t been able to find multiple successful picks that can give them some impact. Some of that is due to their approach where they draft for need, and some is due to it being tough for all of these players to find the field given the talent.

Still, the 49ers must find some success in the upcoming draft, which puts pressure on them. So, how much pressure is on the 49ers to have a successful 2024 draft?

There is a ton of it on them. At least a few players need to be hits for the upcoming season and the foreseeable future. A lot of their star players are getting up there in age or have expiring deals soon. Not to mention that Brock Purdy will end up costing the 49ers quite a chunk of their salary cap space.

The days of the 49ers having this much top heavy talent will end up being reduced once Purdy is due for his deal. It’ll likely come at the cost of at least one star or two, so the 49ers need to hit on some of their draft picks this year to circumvent those losses.

The lack of all around talent showed heavily in the Super Bowl against the Chiefs. When the stars of the 49ers couldn’t win their matchups, the depth players needed to step up, but couldn’t. The rosters of the 49ers in years past have had some quality players beyond their stars. They need to get that going again, especially with the quarterback due for a hefty deal soon.

The 49ers are counting on new defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen to get the unit back to dominance

Now they’re counting on the internal promotion of Nick Sorensen into that role — with a dose of outside perspective from former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley — to get the Niners back to performing at a dominant level defensively after taking a little step back last season. “We all know the standard here and we all want to win, we all want to play great defense and that’s the expectation,” Sorensen said Friday in his first public remarks since being hired earlier this offseason. The 49ers didn’t reach that standard last season under Wilks that had been set under previous coordinators Robert Saleh and DeMeco Ryans, especially in the playoffs when they got gashed on the ground against Green Bay and Detroit and then wilted late in a Super Bowl loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
